LAist: Video of the Day: 37 Bicyclists Detained by 14 LAPD Squad Cars Over Alleged Shoplifting Call

Police state anyone?

From Zach Behrens on LAist:

The text of this video may be slightly over the top, but it brings up some great questions. Why were 37 cyclists detained last Saturday night after a manager at the CVS on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks allegedly called about a cyclist looking fellow shoplifting, but with little description other than that. When police arrived, they detained and searched people of all ages, race, height and gender.

What would have happened if the only describing factor was race instead of “cyclist”? Would the police round up any person of said race for over an hour about a shoplifting call?

In the end, a cyclist was arrested for shoplifting a five-dollar beer (two others were arrested and released on scene for possession of marijuana) with more details still coming out. We’re glad the shoplifter was arrested, but should have the other 36 been put through that process.

the return of the frenchconn.. commenting on his jail time on Midnight Ridazz:

my charges will be dropped when i go to court…. my lawyer told me cause it was a false arrest and no one stoled wiskey that night or even beer.. the person who tried to steal was stopped at the door…..

SEE? DOING ILLEGAL STUFF ON RIDES WILL HURT US, MORE THAN YOU KNOW.

I BET WE CAN NOT GO BACK TO THAT CVS, EVEN ANOTHER RIDE CAN NOT GO THERE, IT DOES NOT MATTER THAT THERE WAS NO CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE, WE CAN NOT GO BACK THERE, TODAY, TOMORROW, NEVER !!

OF COURSE IF THE WORLD COMES TO AN END, THEN WE CAN TAKE ALL THE BEER AT THAT PARTICULAR CVS, BE PREPARED… TO DO THE RIGHT THING AT THE NEXT AND ALL RIDES.

  2. Mikey Wally Says:

I think it is important to note that we do illegal things all the time on rides (and in real life). For example, most of us ride without proper lights and reflectors. We don’t always obey traffic laws, like red lights for example, or correctly indicating a turn. I’m sure we fall under some parade laws and assembly laws as well. Also, I don’t pay for all the music I listen to, I don’t think most people do. Does everyone file there taxes correctly? My own college loan adviser told me to keep my status on unemployed and not pay for a few months even though I’ve been employed because it is “easier for the computers!”

Why is stealing a beer because you aren’t 21 or because you don’t want to pay a bigger deal than any of these? I’m not sure. It seems that the police care deeply about CVS, but they don’t care so much about bettering the lives of poorer humans that don’t live too far away.

I am prepared to do what is right to me all the time. Is the right thing not to steal? Steal from who? What is ownership? Can we think of something better? Can we live something better?

[...] likely they are to be injured. Kinda the theory behind Critical Mass, no? Mickey Walley reports on 37 cyclists detained over a shoplifting incident, and offers an effective way to keep riders from drafting. And finally, China’s Flying Pigeon [...]
